Reading Notes: Canterbury Tales, Part B

Unit: Canterbury Tales retold in Eva March Tappan's The Chaucer Story Book
-I enjoyed part A of this unit so I decided to read the part B

The Prioress's Tale: Little Hugh
-a widow's son
-seven years old
-learns a hymn that is sung in Latin
-Hugh asks an older student about what the words mean--he is told that the hymn was written to Our Blessed Lady. When they sing it, they are praying for her to be their help and comfort when they die.
-Little Hugh was so fascinated by the song that he memorized every single word instead of studying for his other classes.
-the devil did not like how the boy was praising God through singing and convinced the Jews to get rid of the boy
-a murderer cut the boy's throat with a knife and threw him into a pit.
-Hugh's mother searched for him and God led her to the pit
-a miracle: the boy laid in the pit with his throat cut, but he was still singing the hymn
-the provost saw the miracle and had the guilty Jews hung at the gallows
-the Blessed Mother protected the boy, but it was time for him to go to Heaven, so once the grain was removed from Hugh's tongue, Hugh died.
-the church laid the boy's body in a temple of pure white marble
