Once Upon A Time…
Hah, just kidding. This isn’t your typical princess story,
but follow along for a good read.
There was a princess named Elliana in a far away kingdom. She
was known for her compassion, but also her disobedience. She was next in line
for the throne, but first, she needed to marry a prince. This would be easy
except Elliana rarely followed directions, and she refused to become Queen.
One day, the king, Elliana’s father, decided to throw a
royal ball so that Elliana could meet a man. Elliana decided to make her father
angry by arriving to the party dirty and gross so that no man would love her.
Early in the morning, she ran away into the woods to
explore. She came across a boar. The boar began to charge at the princess due
to its aggressive nature. Elliana screeched and instead of running away, she
punched the boar in its face. The boar stopped and was confused as to what just
occurred. They both just stared at each other out of curiosity. Elliana spoke
first, asking the boar if there was a pond nearby. The boar, fascinated that
Elliana acknowledged his presence, led her to a pond. In the pond, a cow was attempting
to swim away from a crocodile. Elliana jumped in and hit the crocodile on its
nose. The crocodile looked at Elliana, looked at the boar that shrugged out of
confusion, and then looked back at Elliana. She introduced herself and
apologized for any inconvenience. She told all three animals that she was going
to a ball, and that if they joined her, she would feed them. As they made their
way back to the castle, a cow, pig, horse, snake, and a family of goats joined
their group. Elliana sparked all of the animals’ interest and they all quickly
became friends. The boar, the crocodile, and the snake grew fond of the princess.
When the princess arrived at the party with her parade of animals, many of the
guests screamed and ran out of the castle. One man, Prince Devin, stayed and
shared his food with the animals. Of course, the princess noticed Devin’s
kindness and wanted to introduce herself, but the king grabbed Elliana’s arm
and ordered her to take the animals back into the woods. She refused, saying if
the animals leave, so does she. The king angrily marched to his room to settle
down.
The next day, Elliana ordered the king’s servants to build a
shed for the animals. She called it a barn. Together, Princess Elliana and
Prince Devin took care of the animals and called themselves farmers. They all
lived happily until one day when the boar professed his love for the Elliana,
asking for her hand in marriage. Elliana laughed and said no. The boar was
embarrassed and left. The next day, the crocodile professed his love. After
getting denied, he too, left and never returned. The snake then thought that
Elliana loved him, so he asked her to marry him. Elliana denied the snake and
told him to leave. This is why the boar is always angry and why crocodiles and
snakes are not farm animals.
…And yes, Elliana and Devin did live happily ever after on
their farm…

Author’s Note:
My story is based off of The Antelope and The Leopard story
from the Congo unit. In this story, the antelope and leopard are friends until a
game of hide and seek. They bet that if the leopard finds the antelope, the
leopard may kill the antelope. So, the antelope tricks the leopard by turning
itself into a beautiful maiden. The leopard wants to marry the beautiful maiden
and does anything that the maiden asks. The maiden asks the leopard to
dismember itself so that it can’t hurt anyone. The antelope reveals itself to
the leopard, thus explaining why leopards always try to antelope nowadays.

Story: The Antelope and The Leopard
Hello Melanie, I really enjoyed reading your version of the story of “The Antelope and The Leopard.” I thought you did a really great job with the story. It all was written very well and flowed throughout the story. It was also really fun to see that the prince shares the same name as me which really made me enjoy the story even more! Overall I thought your story was great, keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteHi Melanie, while I have not read the story you based this off of, " The Antelope and The Leopard," your author's note did a very good job in describing how you chose to relate it to your current story. The beginning of your story already had me curious since you decided to start off with the typical "once upon a time" but then addressed it and said it would not be typical but continue anyway. I thought the rest of it was very well-written and entertaining!
ReplyDeleteHi Melanie! I was always fond of "break the rule" motiff. Your story was so please to read because i just didn't like the traditional princess at much (i used to like their image when i was a little). It also was fun how you describe the wild of those animal, but it made sense too. I wondered what would happen if Devin professed his love? Would she deny him like others? It was really fun if you extend your story to that point.
