Unit: The Monkey King Sun Wu Kung
-taken from The Chinese Fairy Book by R. Wilhelm and translated by Frederick H. Martens

Sun Wu Kung - aka the "Monkey King"
-very famous Chinese folklore and literature character
-He is trained as a magician and warrior
-audacious rebellion against heaven
-Buddha is the only one who is able to intervene
BIRTH:
-born on an island called the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits
-a high rock is on this island that contains all of the hidden seed power of heaven and earth and sun and moon, which endowed it with supernatural creative gifts.
-the rock burst one day and within it was a stone egg, which contained a stone ape
-the stone ape had so much power that even the Lord of the Heavens was frightened by its gaze
-the stone ape became king of all the apes on the island when he found an iron-bridge behind a waterfall
-he was given the name: Handsome King of the Apes
GREAT SEA:
-the King of Apes began to think about life after death - began asking questions
-he wanted to become immortal
-he began to seek out gods and saints in order to learn more about immortality
-Across the Great Sea, the King of the Apes sailed upon Asia. He disguised himself and learned the way of the people around him.
-when he realized that he was not going to find what he was looking for there (Buddism), he sailed across the Western Sea to the land of the West
-He heard a man singing a song taught to the man by a saint. The man led the King of the Apes to a place known as the Mountain of the Heart
-the master gave the ape a name: Sun Wu Kung
-Sun Wu Kung became a disciple to the master - 6-7 years passed
